Labels on pet food give no indication of the source for meat and bone meal. Based on my past experience with most commercial pet food companies. I am not willing to blindly trust the well-being of my animal companions to a spokesperson from the pet food industry. Remember that although this material - meat meal, and meat and bone meal - can no longer be used in feed for cattle, it can still be used in commercial pet foods.

AAFCO and Pet Food Regulations
The FDA works in partnership with the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) and a representative from the FDA/CVM serves on the Board of Directors of AAFCO. However, AAFCO is not a government agency but an organization. AAFCO's literature states that it is an organization "in which officials of state, provincial, dominion and federal agencies, engage in the regulation of production, analysis, labeling, distribution and sale of animal feeds and livestock remedies, may exchange ideas and share experience for mutual benefit and development of uniformity.
It is also interesting to note that although the literature from AAFCO states that this organization is composed of employees of state, federal, and provincial agencies, its membership directory includes representation from a number of pet food companies. Members include Heinz Pet Foods, Bil Jac Pet Foods, Nutramax, Purina, the Iams Company, Nutro, Kal Kan Foods, and American Nutrition Inc. a company that makes a number of name or store-brand pet foods. The roster also includes members from the rendering industry and the Pet Food Institute.

Sodium Pentobarbital in Pet Food
Sodium pentobarbital is a barbiturate drug that veterinarians and animal shelters use to euthanize dogs and cats, but it can also be used on cattle and horses. As I discuss elsewhere, euthanized cats and dogs often end up in rendering vats along with other questionable material to make meat meal and bone meal.
During the 1990's, the FDA/CVM received reports from veterinarians complaining that when they used sodium pentobarbital as an anesthetizing agent for dogs, the drug seemed to be losing it's effectiveness. Based on these reports, CVM officials decided to investigate a plausible theory that the dogs were exposed to pentobarbital through dog food, and that this exposure was making the dogs less responsive to pentobarbital when it was used as a drug. The researchers surmised that sodium pentobarbital was finding its way into commercial pet foods through animals who had been euthanized with this drug and rendered for use as a "meat meal" in pet food.

"Meat Meal" - What is it?
In 1990 when I began investigating the ingredients used in commercial pet food, a veterinarian in the United States advised me the use of pets in pet food was routine practice. Rendering is a cheap viable means of disposal of euthanized pets. Pets are mixed with other materials, including condemned material from slaughterhouse facilities, rotten meat from supermarket shelves, restaurant grease and garbage, "4-D" (dead, diseased, dying, and disabled) animals, roadkill, and zoo animals. These ingredients are listed as "meat meal" on pet food labels. We simply cannot expect our animal companions to enjoy good health and a long life if we feed them a garbage diet.

The Rendering Process for Pet Food Manufacturing
Before I began learning about what goes into commercial pet foods, I knew nothing about rendering plants or how product for pet food was manufactured. Rendering facilities have been around for hundreds of years, yet the general public kows little about the industry. And I am sure that most people do not know that a lot of the by-product created by rendering plants ends up in commercial pet food.
Renderers accept the waste and leftovers from our society. This includes animals picked up by dead stock removal companies; dead zoo animals; roadkill too large to be buried at the side of the road; restaurant and grocery store garbage, including the styrofoam trays and plastic wrap; and hundreds of thousands of euthanized cats and dogs.
Slaughterhouses also provide renderers with the leftovers from slaughtered animals not fit for human consumption. Before these animals parts and by-products used for pet food are shipped from the slaughterhouse to the rendering plant, the by-product is "denatured". This means that crude carbolic acid, cresylic disinfectant, or citronella, is sprayed on the product. In the case of a whole beef or swine carcass that has been condemned, the denaturing product is injected into the entire carcass.

Preservatives in Pet Foods - Did You Know?
Take note that commercial pet food companies usually purchase large quantities of these vitamins and minerals already mixed together, called premixes. This means that your pet is ingesting preservatives from a number of different sources. Artificial flavors, garlic, cheese, and bacon are often added to pet foods to make it more palatable. These flavors, plus the added dyes, which turn the gray matter a bright red, are to give the consumer the impression that the can of dog or cat food is wholesome.
BHA and BHT are preservatives that have long been suspected as being carcinogenic. Both are chemical antioxidants that prevent the fatty contents of pet food from becoming rancid. The foods foods have an endless shelf life with these preservatives.
In a letter to the Center for Veterinary Medicine, Wendall Belfield DVM, addressed the dubious ingredients in pet foods. He wrote, "Chemicals such as BHA, BHT which can initiate birth defects, and damage to liver and kidneys are commonly used preservatives." These preservatives are also found in the human food chain, however, you must remember that we are not ingesting them at every meal as our companion animals may well be if they are eating the same processed pet food daily.
Ethoxyquin is another antioxidant preservative that has since been proven to be highly toxic to animals. It was developed by Monsanto and used extensively in pet foods. Yes, it is still approved by the Food and Drug Administration, Center for Veterinary Medicine, as a preservative in pet food. "Ethoxyquin has been associated with immune deficiency syndrome, leukemia, blindness, skin, stomach, spleen and liver cancer in companion animals." As quoted by: Ann N.
